This is real life.

Did you see Lazy Mom’s PSA?  It inspired me to post these two pictures side by side.

We don’t have a toy room.  And since Adam’s room is upstairs, he can’t play up there alone yet. This is it.  The living room floor.
So although putting a bookcase in the corner and arranging the room this way might not be the best DESIGN decisions, they are the most practical for our family.
I’ve been obsessing about decorating lately, which means that I must be stressed about something.  Remember way back in January (of course you don’t…I didn’t have any followers then) I posted about how I decorate when I’m stressed?  I think I displace my stress and focus on decor, even though that usually is NOT the important thing that I should be spending my energy on.  It’s a pleasant distraction, and somehow, worrying about something that is so relatively insignificant keeps me from freaking out over the big stuff.
Except this time, I’m not sure what the “big stuff” is.  I even called my best friend to make her figure it out for me.  But I’m still not sure.  So I must really be displacing my stress this time, since I don’t even know where the stress is coming from!  It may have started when Adam got the stomach flu and then threw up 4 out of the next 6 nights, but it stuck around since then, so…

Anyway, the point of this post is to remind myself that my house is not going to be magazine perfect as long as I have a kiddo running around, so I need to quit obsessing over fixing every little thing, and be thankful that I was blessed with a little boy who messes up my decor plans.

Would you like to comment?

  1. I've given up on magazine perfect. I can't even understand how people can keep stuff on their coffee table anymore, so I know where you're coming from!

  2. Amen! I wouldn't want to take pictures on a random day! We have a built in in our living room and one whole side if for Jemma's stuff. She can have it all over the living room and at night, she puts it in her cabinet and it disappears like magic! You may think about a book case with doors on the bottom to hide toys!

  3. It doesn't matter what your house looks like, as long as it FEELS like a home! I bet your home is filled with loving memories.

  4. Ha ha! I would willing to bet that 99% of bloggers homes look this way most of the time (I know mine does!!)....we're just all really good at taking shots from a "certain" angle to avoid the clutter! :-)

  6. Oh.. thats alright.. It doesnt really have to be picture perfect.. When my girlies were that small.. I had a little chest in the corner.. and I'd simply dump all their toys in.. As they were growing.. they got into the habbit of dumping their toys back in the chest.. after they're done..

Now the girls are 5 & 7.. and its awesome.. how they sort their room out themselves.. and know that before going to bed.. it needs to be back in order...

  7. I can relate. Everything in my house keeps moving "up." To stay out of little hands...there is no controlling it...only maintaining. I've boxed up a lot of my decor and pictures, simply because I've gotten tired of trying to find safe places for it. I'm glad that the above poster, Patrica, gives me hope that some day they things will be able to move "down" again!! I do have to say, though, that I LOVE your decorating ideas!!
