Mission Organization #1: Multi-Purpose Rooms

I’ve decided my quality of life would be greatly improved if I got organized.  So here I go.

I think it’s great if a room can have more than one purpose.  In small houses, this is often a necessity.  And I would definitely call my living room and dining room multi-purpose rooms, but it wasn’t working for me.  After some serious contemplation, I decided that it was because the different activities my family likes did not have their own, permanent location.  Instead, supplies had been shoved anywhere they would fit, instead of being organized together.

For example:

  • Adam had a basket of books in the living room AND in the dining room.
  • I had a drawer of seasonal home decor in the TV cabinet (living room) and some stored in the china cabinet (dining room.)
  • My scrapbooking supplies were in the china cabinet, Creative Memories products in a smaller cabinet, and photos in the living room.

Not very efficient, huh?

I made this pretty little Venn Diagram showing different ways we use our rooms.  You can see, the green is what overlaps between the two rooms.

After I put my grand plan in action (still working on that part,) this is what I hope my Venn Diagram will look like.

That’s right, my shoes will go in my closet where they belong and the craft stuff will come downstairs.  All of Adam’s stuff will be in the living room, with a special corner (or two) for him to play.

Sounds good in theory, right?  Now it’s time for me to get to work!

  1. You go girl with that diagram. That is very high tech stuff.

  2. Love the circle diagram too, but I would be more entertained with pictures of the house. I am trying to decide if I should take a picture of my war zone just to make sure I am normal! Best of luck with the reorg!

  3. I too live in a small house and each room pretty much has more than one function...love how you 'visualized' it in your diagram! Thanks for stopping by my blog & commenting! I hadn't even thought to use paint on the DIY Topsy Turvy (which is odd since I paint EVERYTHING haha) but that is a fantastic idea!

  5. I got a kick out of your diagrams. I don't know why my DH doesn't understand that his paperwork doesn't go on the kitchen counter. He has a desk! Maybe I need to make him a diagram. lol. Good luck with yours.
